Gentamicin-Montmorillonite Intercalation Compounds as an Active Component of Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose Bionanocomposite Films with Antimicrobial Properties

Abstract The present study introduces an overview of gentamicin-clay mineral systems for applications in biomedicine and then focuses on the development a series gentamicin/clay hybrid materials to be used as bioactive phase hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) produce bionanocomposite membranes possessing antimicrobial activity interest wound-dressing applications. Gentamicin (Gt) was adsorbed from aqueous solutions into montmorillonite (Cloisite®-Na + ) intercalation compounds with tunable content antibiotic. hybrids were characterized by CHN chemical analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric confirming Gt ion-exchange mechanism. release tested water buffer solution check their stability. Hybrids various amounts incorporated HPMC matrix at loadings processed films casting method. resulting Gt-clay/HPMC bionanocomposites means field-emission scanning electron microscopy, also evaluated water-adsorption mechanical properties confirm suitability vitro toward microorganisms ( Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant aureus (MRSA) , vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, Acinetobacter baumannii Klebsiella pneumonia ), showing complete bacterial reduction even small contents.
